Health certificate in Germany for expats, students & seasonal workers
New in Germany and starting a job in a café, restaurant, hotel, festival tent or supermarket? Then one of your first paperwork tasks is the Gesundheitszeugnis — the health certificate under §43 IfSG. I am an international student with a Werkstudent or mini-job in a café — do I need it?
Yes. The rule applies to every person handling open food, regardless of visa status, hours or contract type. Students are one of the biggest groups getting the certificate online.
I want to work at Oktoberfest or a Christmas market — what do I need?
The same §43 IfSG certificate. Festival tents, beer gardens and market stalls hire thousands of seasonal staff and check it before the first shift. It is valid nationwide, so it does not matter which state you got it in.
Does an au pair need it?
Only if the au pair commercially handles food for third parties. Cooking for the host family is private and not covered. If the au pair also works in a café or canteen, then yes.
I do not have a German ID — is a passport enough?
Yes. Any valid government-issued photo ID works: passport, EU ID card, residence permit. The online ID check accepts all of them.
Will I need it again when I move to another German city?
No. The certificate is valid in all 16 federal states indefinitely. Only if you leave food work for years and come back does the 3-months rule matter — and it only applies to your very first food job.
